Not only did all 3 Walnut All-Star teams win today but all 3 qualified for the next round of sanctioned tournaments, the region tournaments. This means that the Shetland B All-Star team will get to play at home as the Shetland Regions are being hosted in Walnut. The Shetland team actually won two games today, first beating Montclair 18-14 and then, without a break, winning against Whittier Red 18 to 13. They have a rematch on Sunday against West Covina Red 5 but win or lose they have made it to the Shetland Regions in Walnut which begins play on July 12.
Over at the Section 1 tournament in Monrovia, the Pinto A/8U All-Star team beat Duarte 11-0 in a game that ended early due to the mercy rule. The game featured an over-the-fence home run by Mark Diaz and a lockdown defense that committed no errors. They will face the tournament’s other undefeated team, Charter Oak Gold, Sunday at 2pm.
The final game of the day was at Section 2 tournaments in West Covina were Walnut’s Pinto B or combo all-stars faced off against Whittier Navy and won 13 to 4. Diego Sigala came in with the bases loaded in the 3rd inning with no outs and struck out the next three batters to keep Walnut from falling behind. Micah Ayala then gave Walnut the lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning with a hit that brought in Chris Raxon and Jacob Hernandez. They also play on Sunday at 2pm but against West Covina Red. Both of Walnut’s Pinto 8 and under all-star teams have advanced, win or lose on Sunday, to next week’s region tournament in Monrovia. Region games for our teams will start July 5 or July 6 depending on seeding.
