Bronco 12’s and Foal Started Play Friday Night

Both the Walnut Foal (Shetland-4) and Bronco 12U teams played their first sanction games Friday night but neither game ended as well as hoped for. The 12’s were playing at the District 2 tournament in West Covina against Rowland Heights. In front of a large group or Walnut supporters, the 12’s kept the game close through 4 1/2 innings but Rowland Heights took advantage of some poor fielding and a 3-run inside-the-park home run to win the game by the 10-run mercy rule, 15-5. They will now face Duarte on Saturday morning and if they win that, they’ll have to play again later in the afternoon.

At the Shetland-4 Section tournament in Fullerton, the Foal team lost their first game 18-8 to La Mirada and face Chino Hills Saturday. Both the 12’s and Foal will play in the next tournament no matter what the results, as both of this weeks tournaments are mostly for seeding purposes.

The Mustang 10U team faced the host team, Charter Oak Gold, at the Mustang 1 District tournament and got no-hit by the Charter Oak pitchers.  The good news was the Walnut pitchers, Matt Leyva and Jaden Smith, also pitched well but several Walnut errors led to a final score 5-1 win for Charter Oak.

On the more positive side, the Shetland 6U team was back to their winning ways as they advanced in the Section 1 tournament in Pasadena with a mercy win of their own, 15-3 against Duarte. They next face Whittier Royal on Saturday. If they win that game they automatically qualify for next week’s Shetland-6 Region.
