Foal All-Stars Win their First Game

Foal All-Stars Win their First Game

The Walnut Foal all-star team (Shetland-4) has had a rough all-star season for their first go of it. They have had to play three straight weekends, including being the only Walnut all-star team to play in a sanctioned PONY tournament during the 4th of July weekend holiday and to make matters worse, they lost their first 5 games and have been eliminated from the both Sections and Regions (Shetland-4 teams all advance to the West Zone World Series no matter what their record). However, when they faced elimination again on a hot Saturday when most 4 year olds would rather be swimming or doing most anything other than playing baseball, our Foal all-stars stepped up and got their first victory at the West Zone World Series  against the West Covina B team, 18-10. The win kept them alive to face Anaheim later that same night.

The Shetland-4 World Series games are played at Amerige Park in Fullerton on a field that not only hosts the much older boys, Pony-13 World Series but used to be the spring training home for the old minor league Pacific Coast League teams sixty to seventy years ago. Legends like Joe DiMaggio, Walter Johnson, and Satchel Paige, are said to have played on that field. It was an odd site seeing 4 year olds playing on such a large field but Fullerton PONY did a nice job accommodating them.

Walnut got off to a good start in the first inning by scoring the maximum 5 runs but Anaheim scored 5 runs in the bottom half and did so every inning for the rest of the game. During the final 5th inning Walnut did take a 22-20 lead but Anaheim scored 3 runs in their half of the inning and walked off with the win. Walnut got a big game from Jacob “J” Cortez, who not only got on base and scored every time up but also hit two inside-the-park home runs to help keep his team close. The loss eliminated our boys from any further games this summer but their are still plenty more summers in the near future for these little sluggers as they continue their journey at Walnut PONY.
