Former Dodger to be Guest Speaker on Opening Day

Walnut Valley PONY Baseball is proud to announce that our special guest speaker for Opening Day Ceremonies will be former Major Leaguer and Los Angeles Dodger pitcher Dennis Powell. Dennis Powell was in the big leagues for a total of eight years starting with the Dodgers in 1985. While Mr. Powell spent most of his career as a relief pitcher he did get the occasional spot start include a game in 1986 against the Pete Rose led Cincinnati Reds, going 7 2/3 innings and only giving up 3 hits. He also has the unique distinction of being one of only 3 major leaguers to finish their career with all 3 of his hits being doubles, having only come to the plate 19 times.

To see the rest of Dennis Powell’s statistics visit his page at Baseball-reference.com. Just a reminder that Opening Day Ceremonies begin at 9:00am but teams should be ready, in full uniform by 8:30am to march onto the North Field. Other speakers will include the Walnut City Council and Mayor Tony Cartagena. The first games will start at 11:30am.
