In one of the best played games of the tournament, Los Alamitos came out on top of Simi Valley 4 to 2 and claimed the title of Mustang-9 West Zone Champion.
Los Alamitos scored first with two sacrifice flies, one each from Luke George and Chase Senteno. Los Alamitos pitcher Jared Anderson retired the first 8 Simi Valley batters he faced before running into a 2-out rally by Simi Valley in the 3rd inning when Simi’s John Peck hit a RBI double that scored Aiden Westerhouse. Los Alamitos held on to that 2-1 lead until the 6th inning when Peck lead off the inning with a single, stole 2nd and 3rd and then scored on a RBI groundout by Roc Riggio to tie the game and send it to extra innings.
Los Alamitos was determined to end the game early and not have to play a second game (if Simi had won, they would have forced a second game). In the top of the 7th inning they got a leadoff walk from Troy Bamberg who was sacrificed over by Logan Miyameto and then moved to third base after a sharp single by Anderson. Simi Valley then threw a couple of wild pitches that scored both Bamberg and Anderson. Los Alamitos pitcher Aaron Onken then retired the Simi Valley batters 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 7th to win the game and championship.
Congratulations to all the teams that won our four sanctioned tournaments, Charter Oak at the Shetland Region, West Covina at the Mustang Region, Irvine at the Bronco-11 Zone and of course today’s champion, Los Alamitos. Special thanks to all the teams, parents and volunteers that made these Walnut tournaments very special.
