Mustang 10U’s Have a Blast During Comeback Victory

The Walnut 10’s got off to a horrible start during their first game of the Mustang Section 2 tournament in Walnut on Friday evening. Against a tough Monrovia team, Walnut gave up 7 runs in the first inning and were behind by a near fatal score of 10 to 2 after two innings. The Walnut hitters woke up in the top of the 3rd inning and sent 12 batters to the plate to score 8 runs and tie the game at 10 apiece. Walnut hitters weren’t done and went on to score every remaining inning, including a big blast over-the-fence home run by Nathan Rodriguez. Meanwhile, pitchers Sean Matsubara and Matthew Leyva, silenced the Monrovia bats, retiring the last 10 batters in a row. Walnut will play Diamond Bar Saturday and if they can win that, they will play for the Section 2 tournament championship on Sunday.

On the north field, Walnut’s 12U Bronco teams needed a win to stay alive in the Bronco Section 2 tournament. They were matched up against Rowland Heights who had just beaten Walnut by a mercy last week at districts. In what seemed to be a pattern for most of the Walnut teams playing on Friday, the 12’s fell behind early 4-0. They quickly rebounded to take a 6-4 lead that they would extend to 11-4. Walnut pitcher Luis Barcenas came in to pitch in the second inning and pitched the remainder of the game, holding Rowland to an additional 3 runs and an 11-7 victory. Walnut will face Charter Oak Blue on Saturday and will play again later that day if they can beat CO.

On the Shetland field, the Walnut 7U’s didn’t get off to a good start to their all-star sanctioned season losing to West Covina Red 8-2. They will match up against Charter Oak Gold on Saturday and also play again later in the day if they should win that one.

Three other Walnut all-star teams were also playing on Friday. The scores and tournaments are listed on the All-Star Results page. From youngest to oldest, here is a brief summary of them:

  • The Shetland 5U team surprised the West Covina team with some solid defense and crafty base running to get away with a 7-6 win
  • Shetland 6’s game from 8 runs down in the fifth inning to beat Monrovia Green 24-23.
  • The Pony division’s 13U team played their first game and also came from behind to beat El Monte 15-8.
