All eight teams competed in games on Thursday, as the Mustang-9 West Zone Tournament got under way.
One of two 5pm games was a game between Brentwood (Northern California) and Los Alamitos. This game sea sawed back and forth for most of the game. Los Alamitos took a 6-2 lead only to see Brentwood score 5 runs on their next at bats and eventually take a 8-6 lead going into the 6th and final inning. But Los Alamitos scored twice more to force extra innings and then take the lead in the 7th inning, to win by a final score of 9 to 8. Queen Creek, Arizona beat Spokane, Washington, 10-7 in another exciting 5pm game on the other field.
The host team, Walnut, took on Vacaville in their opening match at 7:30pm. The game was a rematch of sorts, as the Bronco-11 versions of Walnut and Vacaville played in the opening game of last week’s West Zone tournament also in Walnut. Unfortunately, for the local Walnut fans, the results were the same too, Walnut lost 14-4 in game ended early due to the mercy rule after 4 innings. Vacaville’s bats were led by Kenneth DeCelle, who lead the team with 2 hits and 2 RBI’s and Ethan Lamb who also had 2 hits and scored twice. Walnut will face Brentwood on Friday at 2:30pm needing a win to stay alive in the tournament.
The other 7:30 game featured two heavyweights, in traditional power, Simi Youth/Simi Valley and Super Region winner, Bakersfield. The game was close throughout but Simi Youth took a big lead in the top of the 6th inning and held on to win 15-11.
Games start again at 2:30pm, 5:00pm and 7:30pm on both fields. The live streaming will take place on the smaller south field on Friday and the rest of the tournament. We’re sorry if there are teams that won’t have an opportunity to be seen via the live streaming but it’s too time consuming and difficult to move the camera from one field to the other in between games.
