Both the Pinto A and Pinto B All-Star teams won their opening games at their respective sanction tournaments tonight in games that ended early due to the ten run mercy rule.
Over at the Section 1 tournament, the Pinto A team jumped out to an early 7-1 lead over La Canada thanks to big hits by Andrew Ramirez, Matt Leyva and Nathaniel Rodriguez. Starting pitcher Sean Matsubara kept the La Canada bats silent with the help of a sparkling play by first baseman Michael Mercado. La Canada hung tough to keep the game going past the four inning mercy rule but Walnut finally broke through by reaching the 10-run mercy rule in the bottom of the 5th inning to win by a final score of 14 to 4. They will now play Duarte, Saturday at 4pm.
At the Section 2 tournament, Walnut’s Pinto B all-stars also got off to a great start thanks to Robert McCormick’s 2 RBI triple. Pitcher Chris Razo shut down the Diamond Bar attack and the game ended after the 4th inning with a 11 to 1 victory for Walnut. They will play the Whittier Navy team also on Saturday at 4pm.
Unfortunately, Walnut did not win them all tonight. The Shetland B All-stars got off to a rough start and lost to West Covina Red 5, 18 to 8. They will play Montclair Saturday at noon needing a win to stay alive in the Shetland Section 1 tournament.
