Region Champs, Walnut’s Mustang 10U

Another tournament, another championship banner for our Mustang 10U all-stars. After sweeping through sections two weeks ago and winning that tournament, the 10’s went undefeated again at the tougher East Region tournament and took the championship title. This is the first Mustang Region championship for Walnut since 2008. The 10’s will move on to the Super Regions in San Marcos and play Corona on Friday.

While Walnut jumped in front early once again, as they have most games this tournament, Whittier kept the game close. The 10’s held on to a 5-3 lead going into their half of the 4th inning when Walnut broke open the game thanks to a 3-run inside-the-park home run by Jayden Carbonell-Smith and a 9-3 lead. Manager Sal Rodriguez used a different pitcher every inning, in order: Matthew Fernando, Chris Razo, Robert Johnson, Nathan Rodriguez, Sean Matsubara and Matthew Leyva, who held Whittier and won by a final score of 13-4.
