Walnut Shetland 6U all-stars won the East Region’s Section 1 tournament on Sunday defeating Whittier Royal by a score of 19 to 17. First baseman Jackson Russo led the Walnut bats with a big blast that nearly cleared the outfield wall, while shortstop CJ Carrillo made a nice defensive play by tagging out the potential tying run to get the final out and win the game. Manager Damian Rudolph says he is very proud of his team how they put aside the two losses from last week’s tournament to go undefeated through this tournament. The 6’s will now go onto Region, also in Pasadena and play Monrovia Green on Friday, June 27.
Also playing today were the Mustang 10U team at the District 1 tournament in Charter Oak. Needing to win twice to stay alive and advance to Monday’s championship game, the 10’s did just that. The started hitting early and often by getting by Monterey Park 19-0 with Jaden Smith getting 4 hits and 4 RBI’s along with Anthony Libiano who had 3 hits and 5 RBI’s. Walnut pitchers Chris Razo and Matthew Mora combined to only allow 1 hit. In the following game against traditional powerhouse, West Covina Red, Walnut hitters Nathan Rodriguez and Sean Matsubara went a combined 6 for 6 with 5 RBI’s before the game ended early with a Walnut mercy win, 17-7. The will get a rematch with Charter Oak Gold in Monday’s District 1 championship game, needing to win twice to claim the district title.
