Shetland Teams Play Their First Tournaments

Shetland Teams Play Their First Tournaments

Both Walnut Shetland all-star teams played their first sanctioned tournament games of the summer season Thursday night. The Shetland 5U team is set to play in their own age group tournament, Shetland 5U Region on June 28th, but they are also having to play in the regular Shetland District tournament this week. With expectations not very high due to the fact they will be playing teams with mostly or even all 6 year old’s, the 5U’s pulled off a shocker against the Montclair Shetland team by winning the first game of the Shetland District 1 tournament in Monrovia, by a commanding 11-2 score. Two of the first three Walnut hitters circled the bases as the 5U team built up a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Several more Walnut batters raced around the bases before all was said in done as the 5U bats took advantage of every hit ball. They will next play on Friday night at 5pm against the Shetland team from Pasadena.

A few miles away, at the Shetland District 2 tournament in Duarte, our Shetland 6U team had the misfortune of having to play a very strong Whittier Navy team in the first round. It’s unusual when two leagues with multiple all-star teams have both their “A” teams meet in the first game. Whittier Navy used a very strong defense and made few mistakes as they built up a big 15-3 lead against the Walnut 6’s. However, the Walnut youngsters didn’t give up easily and their bats came alive in the top of the 4th inning with several hard shots that shock up the Whittier team and brought the game closer at 15-7. The 6U team then played strong defense of their own in the bottom of the 4th when a hard line drive was caught by second baseman RJ Sermons who then alertly threw to first baseman Jackson Russo to double up the runner. Walnut again threatened in the final 5th inning but Whittier’s defense was too strong and the game ended 15 to 7. Walnut 6U will now have to play in the loser’s bracket starting Saturday at 10am in a game against Monrovia White.

The Pinto 8U team will play their second game after winning their first on Tuesday, on Friday at 7pm against San Gabriel, also in Duarte.
