A great night of baseball on Tuesday as ten teams battled it out for the right to play on Championship Saturday.
Pinto semi-finals started the evening off with two great games that went down to the last inning. On the north field the Pinto Texas A&M Aggies took a big early lead, 6-0, thanks to a 2-run home run by Elias Riojas and the strong pitching of Isaac Quintanilla, who struck out 5 of the 7 batters he faced. However, the USC Trojans kept coming back with the help of back-to-back home runs by Austin Calzadiaz and Jacob Mikkelson but they fell just short by a 8 to 6 final score.
The other Pinto game between UCLA and Florida State was also close. The Bruins jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a 2-run triple by Jacob Rodriguez. Florida State tied the game in the bottom of the third inning and then took the lead for good after two huge bombs by both Mathis Silva and Adam Ford that rolled to the left field fence. Final score was Florida State 8, UCLA 5. Florida State and Texas A&M will meet Saturday on the north field at 10am to decide the Pinto championship. The game will be live streamed right here.
The Cinderella team of the playoffs almost pulled off another big upset in the Mustang game. The Texas A&M Aggies, with only 2 wins during the regular season, won on Saturday and led the number one seed, USC Trojans, 8-4 going into the 4th inning. The Trojans wouldn’t be denied however, and scored 3 runs in each of the last 3 innings and won 13-12 in the bottom of the 6th inning after Christopher Razo stole home. USC will now face Michigan in the Mustang Championship game, Saturday at 1pm.
In the final game of the night, the Bronco UCLA Bruins and Bronco Notre Dame Fighting Irish, played almost 3 full hours and with only 5 minutes of light left, the winning run was finally scored. UCLA jumped out early with an RBI single each from Juan Guardado and Brian Norwood to give UCLA a 4-1 lead. The lead held until the bottom of the 3rd when the Irish scored 4 runs of their own. The lead went back and forth as both teams scored at least once every inning for the rest of the game. With 2 outs in the top of the 7th inning, UCLA trailed by one run, Nicholas Ramirez crushed a double to right field that scored Francisco Ibarra to tie the game. With only a few minutes left before the lights at Creekside would turn off automatically, Notre Dame needed to score quickly or the game would be suspended and picked up again Wednesday night. Xavier Mendoza, who reached base every at bat this game, hit a screaming line drive for an infield single and went to third base on wild pitches. Jacob Gonzalez then stepped up and hit a soft line drive to right field that scored Mendoza and sent the Fighting Irish into frenzy and into Saturday’s Bronco championship game. They will face the Kansas Jayhawks at 1pm. That game will also be streamed live right here.
The Pony Walnut UCLA team beat the Charter Oak Angels 7 to 3 and will now await the winner of the USC/Michigan game at Snow Creek Wednesday night at 7pm.
Only one score has been reported from Tuesday’s Shetland games. In Tuesday’s Shetland playoffs, Michigan beat Kansas 17-7. Florida State avoided the upset against the number 9 seed UCLA by a score of 12 to 11. The Shetland semi-finals will both be played Wednesday night.
