Two more Walnut teams were eliminated from the PONY all-stat season this weekend. The Pinto 7U team under Richard Freiholtz didn’t finish in the top two of their pool so they did not advance to the Pinto-7 World Series semi-finals. They had a tough start during the tournament in Walnut a few weeks ago but they improved quickly and won the first few games of the Super Region to take their pool.
The other Walnut team eliminated was the Mustang 10U. After having to go through the losers bracket at Mustang Super Regions they did will but the pitching was exhausted and they finally lost to Irvine 18-2. In the earlier game, they managed to beat Orangecrest, 6-5 after a walk-off home run by Matthew Leyva won the game for them. Walnut’s 10U all-stars finished with a remarkable record of 13 wins against only 4 loses and with a East Region championship banner.
The second to last remaining Walnut all-star team is the Pony 14U team under manager Rene Aviles (the other team is the 9U A team under Joey Calzadiaz). They also lost their first game at Regions but have continued to win when their backs are against the wall. On Sunday the won twice, first against Glendora 13-5 and then against West Covina Red. The later game include a 3-run home run by a Walnut player. Walnut will need to beat Diamond Bar, Monday, in order to clinch a spot in the Super Regions.
