Walnut Does Well on First Sanctioned Weekend

Walnut Does Well on First Sanctioned Weekend

Walnut all-star teams combined went had 7 wins and only 2 losses in sanctioned PONY tournament play over the weekend and two of those teams will be playing for those tournament’s championship games Monday and Tuesday.

The Pinto 8U team will play a rematch with Whittier Navy Monday for the District 2 title and have already clinched a spot in the Region tournament, bypassing sections. They beat Diamond Bar Friday night 12-2 and Whittier Navy on Sunday 15-8.

The Shetland 6U teams were both playing in Pasadena but at two different district tournaments. Our 6U B team started off strong in the District 1 tournament by coming back to score 5 runs in their final at-bats to beat Rosemead 6-5 but then lost by one run to Monrovia Green the following day. These are double-elimination tournaments so they played and beat West Covina White on Sunday but were beaten by Diamond Bar, again by one run, later in the day. The Shetland District tournament champions are the only teams that get to bypass sections and go straight to regions so the 6U B team will be playing this Friday at the Section 1 tournament against Pomona.

At the Shetland District 2 tournament, the 6U A team has not lost a game yet. They beat Monterey Park 17-7, Whittier Royal 16-15 and Charter Oak 12-9 to send them into the championship game on Tuesday where they will play either Charter Oak again or West Covina Blue. Again, only the champion advances to regions and the A team will have two chances to become champions in this double-elimination tournament.
