Walnut Teams have Rough First Day

Four of the Walnut all-star teams were in action today, including two playing there first tournament games at Creekside Park. Three of the games were heartbreaking losses while one didn’t start or end well.

The Mustang 10U team was playing at Creekside in the Mustang Region Thursday night and fell in an early 10-0 hole after the first inning against West Covina Blue. They only allowed one more run but they also didn’t score any and lost 11-0. They will face Diamond Bar on Saturday at 10am. In the earlier Mustang Region game, West Covina’s other team, Red, defeated Diamond Bar 8-0.

The Bronco Region, also at Creekside, saw far more exciting games. The first game between San Gabriel and Diamond Bar was a high scoring affair that Diamond Bar held on to win, 9-7. In the nightcap, the Walnut 12U team faced Charter Oak Silver. Walnut starting pitcher, Xavier Mendoza, got off to a rough start by giving up 2 runs in the first inning but then pitched 3 innings of shutout ball while Walnut came back and took a 3-2 lead thanks to RBI singles by Juan Guardado and Jared Free. Charter Oak tied and took the lead 4-3. They held on to that lead in the 7th inning when they picked off the tying run using the hidden ball trick and then their center fielder made a nice grab from a screaming line drive from Guardado for the final out. Walnut will play San Gabriel, also on Saturday at 10am. All Bronco Region games will be streamed live from this website.

Walnut’s Pinto 8U team was in Garden Grove for the Super Region against Irvine. They fell just short with a 3-2 loss. They will now face Simi Valley in hopes of avoiding elimination from the double-elimination tournament.

Our Pony 14U team, a combo team with Charter Oak, was eliminated on Thursday night after suffering a close loss to Sierra Madre 10 to 6.
