Walnut’s 10U Mustang all-stars won the East Region, Section 2 Tournament on Sunday afternoon by beating Monrovia 17-7 to take the championship. Christopher Razo and Jayden Carbonell-Smith led the team with 3 RBI’s apiece including a 3 RBI triple by Smith in the first inning. The 10’s, along with Monrovia, both move on to the Regions in two weeks at West Covina.
Sadly, the Walnut Shetland 6U all-star season came to an end on Sunday with their second loss in the Shetland Region tournament, 25-23 to Whittier Royal. The team got to play 12 sanctioned games and win 8 of them, plus gain a lot of experience for what is sure to be many successful all-star seasons in the near future.
The Bronco 12U players played their last game at Creekside Park Sunday in a game between both 3rd place from both Section tournaments. Walnut manged to beat Duarte, 10-9 and advance to their Region Tournament also in 2 weeks in West Covina. Angel Guardado had a huge day, he pitched all 7 innings, struck out 11, went 4 for 4 at the plate and scored the walk-off run after leading the bottom of the 7th inning off with a double that nearly left the yard. Ethan Martinez hit a double to score Guardado and end the game.
In what is becoming a very common news item, the 8’s won again at Regions against West Covina Red 4-2. That should but them in the championship game but the Regions brackets show them as champions. Still checking to see if this is a misprint or if now further Region games will be played. The three remaining teams have qualified for Super Region and Walnut has qualified and already beaten the other two.
The Shetland 5’s lost to West Covina, 16-5, and were eliminated from the Shetland 5U Region but all teams advance to the West Zone World Series.
All the other local Walnut tournaments also ended on Sunday with West Covina Red winning the Pinto 7U region and La Canada, needing to beat West Covina Blue back to back, did just that and took the Bronco Section 2 tournament.
