The West Zone tournaments hosted by Walnut PONY concluded Sunday and Monday as a champion was crowned and will advance to their World Series. Also three of the last four remaining Walnut all-star teams were eliminated at their Super Regions.
The team from Murrieta won the Bronco-11 West Zone tournament by beating Irvine 4-3 in the final and will go to Virginia as the West Zone representative at the Bronco-11 World Series. Walnut’s 11U team did well by winning it’s first two games but then lost twice to Irvine and were eliminated.
In what is reported to be the first time in PONY history, two teams from the same league not only played in the same zone tournament but ended up in the Mustang-9 West Zone championship game. Simi Youth Baseballs Red and Blue teams met Monday night to determine who would represent the West Zone in the Mustang-9 World Series, also hosted by Walnut later this week. Simi’s Red team won 10-0. Walnut’s own 9U team gets a pass directly to the World Series and begin play on Thursday.
Two other Walnut teams were in action over the weekend. The shorthanded Pony 14U team was at their Super Region and lost both games and were eliminated. The Bronco 12U team lost it’s first game but recovered to win two more games, including an upset of West Covina, 9-2. They later lost again to Fountain Valley in extra innings and were eliminated.
